Today is Festival at my middle school. It’s a pretty cool day where there’s a bunch of student performances, homemade treats for sale and there’s no school. I was asked (told) that I was performing today by my boss, so he found a guitar from a student and told me to play something. PLaying guitar is one of my stock answers to the eternal “what are your hobbies” question, so he just figured that was sorta my performance “thing”. I was gunning for something with easy vocal chops to play, but turns out I had to play something that Korean people know. As it happens, that’s mostly crappy songs from 30 years ago. I looked up a list of famous English songs here, and I was shocked. They even had a Wham song, but not “wake me up”! There’s another Wham song that’s popular here (and I’m talking Top 100 popular with the likes of Hotel California!).Shocking in more ways that one. So I ended up picking Hey Jude. The vocals are a bit (read: very) straining for me, and I had to learn it in one night after not playing guitar seriously for 2 years. It went ok. The kids seemed to like it. I even saw a few signs in the crowd with my name on them and before the show I felt like a rockstar with kids taking picture of me and generally freaking out when they saw me. It’s funny because at the end of each performance, regardless of its quality, there’s general freak out cheering from the crowd. It’s cool, these kids are really enthusiastic about everything.
It’s also funny because this is the first time the kids have seen me outside of class in large groups now that they known me. So I got mobbed for pictures like you wouldn’t believe. I got introduced to a group of moms cooking some snacks by the school principal, and got the typical “handsome guy” comments.
Is this going directly to my head? Yes. I won’t be able to stand myself by the end of the year.
