Yesterday I had my first experience in a Korean spa. What exactly is a Korean spa you might ask? Picture this. A room the size of a high-school gym filled with 6 or 7 Jacuzzis of varying temperature, a few saunas (of varying temperature, of course), some showers, and a slew of naked Korean men. Some spas (like the one I visited) even have a barber and a few masseuse on location. At first, the idea of hang out (literally) with a bunch of naked Korean dudes might not seem too appealing, but I assure it, it’s quite normal and enjoyable. I think you need to try it at least once if you’re here.
Not only can you relax in hot baths at this spa, but there’s a coed area upstairs. This spot, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of Korean ingenuity. They took everything they enjoy; norebang (karaoke), PC bang (pc room), bars, restaurants and tv, put all of these amenities in a room, added some mats to sleep on and put in some hot and cold rooms for good measure. It’s really quite a place. I’m convinced you could live on those two levels for a long time. There’s really no need to escape to the real world. Unsurprisingly, Korean spa is often used by people coming back from bar as a place to sleep and clean up the morning after. Since they’re usually under 10 000won (10$) and offer a sleeping area, it’s a good deal.
The one I went to with my friend is near Sungkyunkwan university in Suwon and cost 7000won. It’s right by the station in that giant building with all those lights, you can’t miss it.
As a side not, when I went to Japan, my friend and I visited a public bath and a hot spring. I went to the spa with the same friend. This means that he is the person I’ve seen nude the most this year. Something to think about….
