Due to a great stroke of luck, I have the next 5 days off. Labour day, Children’s Day and a school renovation day off all line up nicely to make a cool long weekend. Initially, I wanted to go to Taiwan, but the flights were all booked. My next idea was to go to Jeju island (in Korea) , but the flights were booked too. So, instead of mulling around my apartment, kicking at the floor complaining about how my vacation would have been a million times better had I know about it earlier, I decided to tour a bit of the Korean West coast.
On Friday, I’m going to explore the islands off the coast of Gunsan. I found this spot with the help of the Discovering Korea blog, which is an awesome read. I’m not 100% about how transportation to the island works, but I have a vague idea. Hopefully that’ll do.
On Saturday morning, we’re going to head off to Jeonju for the Jeonju International Film Festival. I’m really not sure what to expect from this film festival, as it’s my first, but there seem to be a few cool movies and it’ll be a good chance to explore a new Korean city. I’m a bit nervous because we don’t have any movie tickets. Hopefully we’ll be able to buy some of the additional tickets once we get there. Should be a cool experience. We’ve got 2 nights booked at a motel in Jeonju and really, that’s all we need; a place to sleep.
On Monday morning, we’re gonna leave the province and head South to end up at the most Western area of Korea in a city called Mokpo. Once we’re there, we’ll take a boat to the Sinan. If I understand correctly, there is a little network of island connected by roads on the island where we are going. So for Monday and Tuesday, we’re going to relax and explore the islands. Our vacation will end at 4:10pm on Tuesday, when we will board the train back to Suwon.
I’m really excited for our trip. I think we’ll see parts of Korea that, though beautiful, are underappreciated by the typical foreigner (and Korean). Obviously, I’ll provide an update when I get back.
