Last Sunday, I went for a walk around Olympic Park with my friend. It was a beautiful day and I needed to get out of the house. Perfect. One of my favorite parts of the park is a giant monument found at the park entrance that reminds me of imposing Communist monoliths you’d see in the USSR (in my imagination, at least). My friend disagreed with me and said it represented the Olympics, global unity and the spirit of cooperation. I still think it’s a symbol of communist oppression.
On our way to the park, I kept on hearing this super loud noise. I couldn’t quite place the sound. It wasn’t a construction sound, but it didn’t really sound animal too. The noise was crazy loud. We actually had to stop talking because of the volume. Turns out, this noise was coming from insects (I suspects thousands, if not more) in the trees. I eventually found one of these little monstrosities. They’re about the size of a loonie (for a Canadian frame of reference) and they look like if a moth and a butterfly matter had a Ménage à trois with Satan.
Thinking about it now, it was pretty ridiculous, but I was convinced this theater of loud bugs were communicating together, planning a coordinated attack on humanity. Like I said, it’s pretty ridiculous thinking about it now. I still don’t trust them though…
So, if you’re walking around Seoul and you hear a super loud white noise, now you know what it is. It’s the insects plotting to kill you.
