I need to teach a summer camps next Friday and Saturday. The theme assigned to me is food. So the school wants me to teach the kids cooking vocabulary and get them to cook something on Saturday. No problem I figured. I like cooking and I like teaching, so this should be a blast. I suggested that I try a creamy short pasta recipe. Something like that Philadelphia Cream Cheese with pesto recipe (only without pesto). The pesto with Phili cream cheese is delicious by the way.
Anyway, today was my first day of summer classes. I’ve been away from teaching these kids for a week. As I was standing there staring at the kids hitting each other, yelling and generally freaking out; it hit me. Handing them knives and fire is bad idea.
Seriously. I can just imagine the scene. Boys messing around near an open flame. One catches on fire. Surrounding him, his friends freak out. Laughing and yelling. Girls are softening onions. They forget to put in oil. They start talking and ignore the onion. The onions start burning. Smoke fills the room. A kid is cutting a cherry tomato. His friend is hitting him. The tomato slips. He cuts his finger. He screams. The girls scream. The room is still smoky. There is water everywhere from extinguishing the student. Someone starts running. They slip and fall. Chaos. Total chaos.
So, I decided to change the plan from pasta to no bake cookies. I feel safer making something that only requires one open flame per group and no knives. Much safer.
